Born into a wealthy merchant family in Yokohama, exposed to Western culture from childhood.

Resigned and founded the Japan Art Institute with Yokoyama Taikan and others.

1903The Ideals of the East Published

Published The Ideals of the East in English. Famous for its opening Asia is One.

1904Boston Museum of Fine Arts

Appointed curator of Asian art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

1906The Book of Tea Published

Published The Book of Tea. Introduced Eastern aesthetics through the tea ceremony.
