Born into a wealthy merchant family in Yokohama, exposed to Western culture from childhood.
Enrolled at Tokyo Kaisei School, mastered English and met Ernest Fenollosa.

Became the first principal of Tokyo Fine Arts School.
Resigned and founded the Japan Art Institute with Yokoyama Taikan and others.

Published The Ideals of the East in English. Famous for its opening Asia is One.
Appointed curator of Asian art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
Published The Book of Tea. Introduced Eastern aesthetics through the tea ceremony.
Visited China to collect Chinese art for the Boston Museum.
Revived the Japan Art Institute with Yokoyama Taikan and others.
Died in Akakura, Niigata. Age 50.
